Many people felt the Golden State Warriors had become legitimate championship contenders after they traded for Jimmy Butler in February. But they lost in five games to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Western Conference semifinals, and all of a sudden, they have taken on the look of a team that needs some work.
While Stephen Curry's hamstring injury was a major factor in that loss to Minnesota, they also need a couple more complementary players to win it all for the fifth time in the Curry era. Their biggest roster need appears to be a starting-caliber center with the size to hold down that position, especially defensively and on the boards.
Head coach Steve Kerr seemed to echo that sentiment by saying he doesn't want forward Draymond Green to masquerade as a 5 anymore.
“I don't want to start next season with Draymond as our starting center,” Kerr said. “I think it's doable for the last 30 games like we did this year, but you see the toll it takes on him.”

Even at age 35, Green remains an integral part of what Kerr and the Warriors do. He's their Swiss Army knife, as he ignited their running game, hits the open man and grabs rebounds.
He's also still an outstanding defender, and late this season, he was mentioned as a candidate for the Defensive Player of the Year, an award he won back in the 2016-17 season.
But at 6-foot-6 and 230 pounds, Green simply cannot play at the 5, at least not for long stretches.
Right now, the only rotation player Golden State has who is taller than 6-foot-9 is Quinten Post, who averaged 8.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and 0.4 blocks in 16.3 minutes a game during the regular season. He simply cannot be counted on to start at center or even play a significant number of minutes in the playoffs.
