Steve Nash gets real about the Phoenix Suns’ ‘cultural reset’ ahead of the 2025-26 NBA season.
The Phoenix Suns will start their season without the dynamic duo of Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal after parting ways with them in the offseason.
Additionally, the Suns have a rookie head coach in Jordan Ott. While many doubt the Suns’ decision, former NBA star Steve Nash is in favor of the move.
Despite having a star-studded roster, the Suns failed to impress in the postseason during the KD-Beal-Devin Booker era.
But the Suns have purged their roster ahead of the 2025-26 NBA season, and Nash shared his thoughts on the decision during ‘The Pat McAfee Show.’
“I think the first thing we want is a cultural reset. They swung for the fences the last few years and didn’t really get far in the playoffs. They decided to reset the organization,” Nash said.
He added: “They have a rookie coach; they have a rookie GM, and they’re trying to really just create an environment where players feel like they can get better, like they can develop an identity without assets.”
Nash also pointed out that the Suns not having their draft picks ‘for years’ was a blessing in disguise. How? Well, it gives the organization a shot at developing its in-house players to become elite stars in the league.
All things considered, the Suns have a mediocre roster heading into the new season. Despite that, owner Mat Ishbia defended the team after Bill Simmons’ brutal take on the culture.
As the head coach, Ott will be crucial in helping the Suns back up Ishbia’s massive claims. For what it’s worth, the rookie HC may very well do that, as even Nash sang praises of him.
“It’s been really exciting to see Jordan Ott, our first-year coach here, has created an environment where all the players are working hard.
“They’re competing. They’re combative, but they feel like they have an opportunity and a path to get better. That’s all you can do at this stage or arc of development,” Nash stated.
Lastly, Nash predicts that the Suns will surprise the NBA, thanks to their competitive spirit.
“They’re going to surprise you a little bit because they’re going to be super competitive. They’re going to share the ball. They’re going to play hard, and I think the Valley will really enjoy watching them play.”
The Suns will open their season against the Sacramento Kings, and it will be interesting to see how many of Nash’s predictions turn out to be true.
