The Minnesota Timberwolves just won their first NBA Summer League game against the New Orleans Pelicans. It was an impressive performance, particularly from Joan Beringer. However, people also need to look at the guards, who performed well, including Rob Dillingham and Amari Bailey.
These two guards were superb for the Timberwolves, but they gave a lot of credit to the preparation. That includes the lessons they learned from the Timberwolves' resident veteran guard Mike Conley Jr.
At 37, Conley is in the twilight of his career. Despite this, many people can look back at how well he played over the years. Since he was the fourth overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, Conley has been one of the most impressive point guards.
He has never been the flashy guard, but he has always been a fantastic example of an NBA point guard. He is always under control with an uncanny ability to dictate the game. For young point guards, he is the optimal role model to look up to, including youngsters like Bailey and Dillingham.
The point guard position is one of the most difficult ones to play in the NBA. Every point guard prospect finds it a bit difficult to adjust to the league due to the intense pace and physicality.
A veteran can help bridge the gap, and Conley has been phenomenal in this role for a long time. Ever since his days playing for the Memphis Grizzlies and Utah Jazz, Conley has been a reliable veteran to learn from.

Today, with the Timberwolves, players like Bailey and Dillingham are learning from him directly. At the same time, they are also learning from watching his game film.
"Biggest takeaway from watching Mike is his everyday professionalism. How he’s just elite for everyone, and how he’s uplifting because his body might not be how it was able to move in his prime, but at the same time, he’s damn near the smartest person on the floor at all times," Bailey said during Summer League practice.
With Bailey and Dillingham always gushing about Conley, anyone can tell that he influences the team's guards. Even Anthony Edwards is a big fan of Conley due to his intelligent approach to the game.

Dillingham is likely taking that starting spot in the future, and with Conley helping him now, he will be improved by the time Chris Finch calls him up. This Timberwolves team has immense potential, and it will only get better due to the help of their veterans.
Rudy Gobert is doing it for bigs like Joan Beringer and Rocco Zikarsky, while Conley is doing it for guards like Dillingham, Bailey, and Edwards. The future is bright, and it will only keep shining brighter.
