PHOENIX — The Phoenix Suns are just one day away from starting the 2025-26 NBA season against the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday.
Phoenix will remain without star guard Jalen Green, who came from the Houston Rockets via trade in early July. Green has been harboring a hamstring injury that kept him out of the entire preseason.
Ahead of opening night, Suns coach Jordan Ott gave some crucial updates on the budding young star.
“Still no live play for Jalen,” Ott said after Monday’s practice. “He’s still taking it– obviously, progress has been made, but we’re still taking it day by day. Again, it’s those soft tissues, you don’t know exactly where it’s at. You’ll see him do work before practice. It’s that same timeline. He wont’ be there opening night.”
The 23-year-old guard is coming off a year of growth in Houston. He played and started in all 82 games and averaged 21.0 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists on 42.3/35.4/81.3 shooting splits.
The biggest question surrounding his arrival in Phoenix has been his fit alongside Devin Booker, being that they are both shooting guards. Green’s growth and fit next to Phoenix’s franchise cornerstone will be a story to watch this year.
Sacramento big man Domantas Sabonis will miss opening night as he’s dealing with the same hamstring strain keeping green out of the contest.
Sabonis is coming off a formidable year, averaging 19.1 points, 13.9 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game in 70 appearances. He and the staunch veteran Kings are looking to be competitive in an uber-competitive Western Conference.
Given the fact that it’ merely game one of 82, the result of Wednesday’s season opener may not mean much in the grand scheme of things, but a win to start off Jordan Ott’s tenure in The Valley would be ideal. Sabonis being out helps that.
The Suns are deep at the center position, but the Sacramento big man present problems to each of Phoenix’s diversely-skilled bigs. The Kings’ depth behind Sabonis also leaves much to be desired.
