PHOENIX — Collin Gillespie has been one of the Phoenix Suns’ most effective and important players so far this season, so much so that he has joined an NBA Finals MVP in exclusive company.
Through 22 games, Gillespie has joined Golden State Warriors’ Steph Curry as the only players with 100+ assists, 60+ 3-pointers made, 25+ steals, a 60+ true shooting percentage and 44+ 3-point percentage. Curry accomplished the feat in the 2015-16 season.
For the Suns guard, it’s more than just shooting from beyond the arc. He has been productive on both sides of the ball and has delivered clutch shots when the team needs them most.
Gillespie wasn’t even on the team full-time at this point last year, on a two-way contract and spending much of the season with the Suns’ G-League affiliate. This season, he’s making his presence known as a two-way player and an important rotation piece.
It’s no secret the Suns have been hit with the injury bug, including All-Star Devin Booker. This has been Gillespie’s moment to shine, stepping in as the next man up when a key player goes down.
The Suns weren’t given much of a chance in preseason predictions, with many viewing them as a poor defensive team. However, Gillespie has been central to changing that narrative and showing why Phoenix can still contend despite a rebuild.
Gillespie’s story has been one to watch this season, and if he continues on this trajectory, he won’t be ignored much longer in the national conversation.
A NIGHT TO REMEMBER FOR COLLIN GILLESPIE.
