PHOENIX — San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama couldn’t find an answer against the Phoenix Suns, who handed the Spurs their first loss of the season Sunday, 130‑118.

Phoenix’s defense was on full display, neutralizing one of the league’s most hyped young players. With quick rotations, the Suns disrupted the Spurs’ usual flow and Wembanyama was unable to adapt throughout the game.

Along with scoring nine points, Wembanyama shot just 4‑14 from the field and made only one 3‑pointer on five attempts. While some may dismiss it as a bad night for the Spurs forward, much of his struggle was due to Phoenix’s physical defensive attack.

Before Sunday’s game, Wembanyama was averaging 30 points. Being held 21 points below his average highlighted Phoenix’s defensive identity and boosted the team’s confidence as it navigates injuries early in the season.

Fans were pleasantly surprised by the team’s game plan and how they kept the once-undefeated Spurs on their toes throughout the entire game.

The Suns’ defense wasn’t the only aspect that stood out in the victory.

Devin Boker had another excellent night, with 28 points, 13 assists and two rebounds. Ryan Dunn had 17 points with five rebounds and one assist.

While the season hasn’t started as Phoenix envisioned, Sunday’s win gave the team back-to-back victories as they continue searching for identity in the rebuild. Defeating the Spurs may provide the momentum the Suns need to start a winning streak.

Wembanyama’s stat line highlighted what the Suns are capable of and their ability to contain a rising talent through veteran basketball IQ.
