It has been an interesting offseason for the Phoenix Suns as they have already made major changes to their roster after missing the playoffs last season and more moves could be on the way before the start of the 2025-26 NBA season.
Of course, the Suns have already broke apart their star trio of Devin Booker, Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal as they traded Durant to the Houston Rockets and bought out Beal’s contract, allowing him to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers.
Now with only Booker remaining, the Suns find themselves in the middle of a mini-rebuild, though they did add some key players this offseason in Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, Khaman Maluach and Mark Williams.
Despite this, Phoenix is still expected to be a fringe Play-In team next season and with them not owning their own 2026 first-round pick, they could look around the league to find a key young player to add to their roster via trade.
FanSided’s Luke Duffy recently urged the Suns to pursue Devin Carter of the Sacramento Kings with Phoenix in desperate need of point guard depth behind Booker and Collin Gillespie.
“Not that Carter is the answer either, but there's some clear upside there. He can do a little bit of everything and he wouldn't cost a lot either. Nick Richards is a player the Suns are rumored to have offered up as part of a potential Jonathan K uminga deal, although we know that went nowhere,” Duffy wrote.
Duffy makes a great point about Carter’s upside and he even creates the outline of a mock trade that would send Richards to the Kings in exchange for Carter, which Sacramento could be open to after trading Jonas Valanciunas earlier this summer.
For Carter, he had an up-and-down rookie season last year after missing the start of the season due to offseason shoulder surgery.
Despite his struggles at times, the 23-year-old guard showed flashes of being a starting point guard in the NBA, especially due to his elite defensive play.
While Carter does excel on the defensive end, he does need to improve his shooting numbers and he would likely have a larger opportunity to do so in Phoenix with their lack of guard depth than in Sacramento, though the Kings may not want to move on from him quite yet.
