Suns Waiving Cody Martin, Making Him Free Agent

The Phoenix Suns are waiving forward Cody Martin, sending him into unrestricted free agency, per John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7.

As Gamabador notes, Martin’s contract was set to become guaranteed at the end of the day.

Martin, 29, is 6-foot-5 and was acquired by the Suns in a deal at the February trade deadline with the Charlotte Hornets that also involved Jusuf Nurkic (since traded to the Utah Jazz).

Martin averaged 6.8 points and 4.2 rebounds in 53 total games with the Hornets and Suns this past season. He had spent the first six-plus years of his career in Charlotte.

He received limited action in his time with Phoenix, though, appearing in 14 games and averaging 3.7 points in just under 15 minutes a night.

Martin will have to wait 48 hours to clear waivers before officially entering free agency. By all accounts, he will indeed clear waivers.

Hoops Wire sources have said the Washington Wizards could be among the teams with interest.

Overall, Martin has never been much of a scoring threat, but he offers tough defense at the wing spots and makes hustle plays — meaning someone is likely to take a flier on him before training camps get underway in the fall.
