We’re not even officially into the offseason, but hey, none of that matters. The Cavaliers trade rumors have already begun.
You’ve heard the names: Darius Garland. Jarrett Allen. And what will become of Ty Jerome? I take a deep dive into what the Cavs may be thinking, and what they most certainly are not, as we enter June and the NBA’s silly season, on the latest Hoops Wire Live from 330 to Go. Check it out here or directly below.
Interestingly, these are largely the same conversations we were having last offseason. Garland has to be traded, some fans might say. Allen isn’t tough enough, others might add.
Now, we’ve added, Jerome was terrible in the playoffs. That, of course, isn’t entirely true. He was bad against the Pacers. He was very good against the Heat. Now, he’s about to hit free agency.
That said, if you trade Garland, or Allen, or let Jerome walk in free agency, you suddenly have some big holes to fill. You’ll need to replace an All-Star point guard, a borderline All-Star center, and a Sixth Man of the Year finalist from a 64-18 team.
Doable, but not exactly all that realistic.
The worst way to react to another second-round playoff exit is to overreact. But that’s why the word “fan” is short for “fanatic.” There’s little room for patience or perspective.
I get that. Failing to advance beyond the second round in any of the three Donovan Mitchell seasons does indeed call for some changes.
But as I discussed on the show, those changes don’t necessarily need to be sweeping. They actually can be subtle. For my entire thoughts on the Cavaliers, check out Hoops Wire Live here or, again, directly above.
