'The most arrogant person I have ever met in my life' - Jayson Williams on being teammates with Karl Malone in the All-Star game

There's no denying the All-Star game contains some of the most talented basketball players in history.

According to ex-NBA power forward Jayson Williams, that game also shows how a lot of these stars are really egotistical.

Kobe waves off Malone

Williams represented the Eastern Conference in his only All-Star appearance in 1998. This was when the great Kobe Bryant famously waved off Karl Malone so he could take Michael Jordan 1-on-1.

"I remember everybody going, 'Nobody tells Karl Malone to get off the block!'" Williams recalled, per ESPN. "He has his hands up; you give him the ball. I was like, 'Whoa! This dude is the most arrogant person I have ever met in my life.'"

Malone could not believe that a 19-year-old could do that to him. He was used to his teammates feeding him the ball when he was on the low block. And when he offered a screen, he was used to receiving a perfect bounce pass to finish the play. But at that moment, he received nothing.

Years after the incident, the Mailman admitted he was infuriated when Kobe told him to get out of the way.

"I told Coach [George] Karl, when younger guys tell me to get out of the way, that's a game I don't need to be in. I was ticked," shared Malone, per Sports Illustrated.

Malone got teased

But while Malone was steaming mad, the Western bench was having the time of their lives. Then Phoenix Suns star guard Jason Kidd recalled how the entire squad continuously nagged the two-time MVP.

But over in the Western team's bench, the infamous sequence became a cause of laughter. While Williams was shocked, Phoenix Suns star guard Jason Kidd was having the time of his life.

"One of the plays I will never forget, you can ask Karl Malone about it, is that he asked for a pick-and-roll. And Kobe waved him off. I think we were in awe or in shock. You know, Karl Malone pick-and-roll with John Stockton. They've done it a million times. But Kobe was like, 'No, no, no. I got this by myself.'"

"One, for you to have the nerve to wave Karl off even if he wasn't the MVP just because of his muscles, you had to be different. And so on the bench, we were all in tears, laughing and giving Karl a hard time."

That 1998 All-Star game moment was indeed a classic one. All the parties involved had different experiences and different sentiments. Initially, it seemed that only Malone had a sour moment. But Williams, a keen spectator of the moment, saw the true colors of one of the greats.
