The New York Knicks face a busy offseason with dual priorities: finding Tom Thibodeau’s replacement and upgrading their roster.

The franchise recently expressed interest in South Carolina’s Dawn Staley for the coaching vacancy.

The Knicks remain active in player acquisition despite ongoing coaching uncertainties. Following their signing of undrafted rookie Dink Pate to an Exhibit 10 contract, New York has shifted focus to veteran talent.

Tyus Jones could be the steal of free agency after Phoenix disaster

Knicks reporter Ian Begley revealed mutual interest between the Knicks and Tyus Jones dating back to last season.

However, the veteran guard ended up in Phoenix over New York, where he averaged 10.2 points, 5.3 assists, and 2.4 rebounds while shooting an impressive 41.4% from three-point range.

“I think Tyus Jones is a name that I’m keeping an eye on because last summer there was mutual interest between the Knicks and Jones, and Jones was even willing to take a pay cut to come to New York,” Begley explained.

“He ended up choosing Phoenix, thinking it would be a very good situation for him. Didn’t work out, so he’s back on the market.”

The Suns’ disappointing season and early playoff exit left Jones searching for a new opportunity. His proven ability to run an offense and hit clutch three-pointers makes him an attractive option for contending teams seeking depth.

Karl-Anthony Towns reunion could unlock devastating pick-and-roll chemistry

Jones represents more than just a quality backup behind Jalen Brunson. The veteran guard brings proven experience and established chemistry with Karl-Anthony Towns from their Minnesota days.

The duo played together from 2015-2019 before Jones joined Memphis, developing a strong understanding of each other’s games.

Their previous partnership could translate into immediate on-court adjustment. Jones excels at finding big men in advantageous positions, while Towns’ improved three-point shooting creates spacing for effective pick-and-roll execution.

Financial flexibility makes Jones signing a no-brainer for New York

The financial aspect makes Jones even more attractive for the cap-strapped Knicks. New York can offer him a veteran minimum contract, fitting perfectly within their current salary constraints without sacrificing future flexibility.

“The Knicks have this $5 million exception to offer free agents. They also have the veterans minimum exception,” Begley noted.

“So they have some tools to go out there and talk to free agents with.” This gives New York multiple pathways to secure Jones without compromising their long-term plans.

The Knicks must also address their own free agents, including Delon Wright, Precious Achiuwa, Landry Shamet, and Cam Payne.
