The New York Knicks’ coaching decision is dominating their attention right now, ahead of free agency.
Former NBA star Kevin Garnett warned the New York Knicks face a deadline to appoint their new head coach before the draft and free agency.
The New York Knicks are not moving with the same urgency, preferring to take their time to ensure they make the right hire, and not the quickest possible one.
The front office must then make their free agency decisions without the guidance of a head coach,
One of those upcoming choices is set to be made over Precious Achiuwa, a player the team acquired in a trade in 2023.
Precious Achiuwa was traded to the New York Knicks from the Toronto Raptors 18 months ago, as part of the trade to bring OG Anunoby to the team.
Anunoby was the centerpiece of the deal, with Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barrett sent to Toronto, and it’s a deal that has become a major win for the Knicks.
Last summer Anunoby signed a five-year $212.5 million contract to commit long-term to the Knicks.
Precious Achiuwa is less certain to stay with the team. His current deal with the Knicks expires this June 2025, and he is set to become an unrestricted free agent.
Last summer he signed a one-year extension at $6 million, a low cost to stick around, but this summer amid a fresh start in New York, it’s likely he will test the market.
Precious Achiuwa began the season injured before returning to play a role from the bench, as part of the Knicks’ sparingly used rotation under Thibodeau.
In total Achiuwa played in 57 regular season games in 2024-25, named as a starter 10 times.
This saw him log 20.6 minutes per game and 6.6 points per game, with 5.6 rebounds. These numbers nosedived in the postseason.
Out of a possibly 18 postseason games, Achiuwa only played in 8 of them. And these came at 4.3 minutes per game, where he contributed 1.8 ppg and 1.1 rpg.
Thibodeau’s tightened rotation saw him take the opinion Achiuwa was not a meaningful contributor when it mattered. The question now is how much stock the Knicks place in his judgment now he is gone.
If the Knicks could re-sign Achiuwa at his previous value of a $6m contract, there is a discussion to be had.
But if another team values him higher and shows more desire to bring him on, then the Knicks could be reluctant to match their offer.
