The first round of the NBA draft is over, and there is a lot to take away. Future superstars were selected, major trades were made, and confusion ensued. The next step in the NBA cycle has just taken place, and the entire league has shifted. However, above all, one team stood out. That was the San Antonio Spurs.
Over every successful team on day one of the draft, the Spurs walked away as the grand champions. Holding onto their 2nd and 14th picks in the lottery, the Spurs went home with two excellent selections. In the draft, the Spurs selected Rutgers phenom Dylan Harper with the second overall pick and rising star out of Arizona, Carter Bryant. Both of these picks were a luxury, and the Spurs came away with superior value given their draft position.
There was never any doubt that Harper would be selected with the second overall pick, but it was still a slam dunk. The Spurs lucked into the selection and were given the honor of selecting a dynamic, likely future All-Star. The blossoming talent has handles for days, elite moves, and electric finishing ability. He will be able to score on NBA defenses from day one and will quickly be a valued part of the offense. Moreover, he can playmake exceptionally well at the point guard position and will be a leader of men.
What is so intriguing about Harper is his dedication and drive towards becoming the best player he can be. By all accounts, Harper is a great human being and an incredibly hard worker. He will fit right into the Spurs culture.
Say what you want about the fit, the Spurs will do everything they can to conform him to their team. He has the support of everyone around him, and the front office has displayed its belief in him throughout the entire draft process. Overall, Harper and Victor Wembanyama will form a dynamic pairing for the Spurs organization going forward.
The Spurs couldn’t believe their luck when Bryant fell to them at pick 14. In almost every mock draft on the internet, Bryant was taken within the top 12 picks. The athletic beast was easily one of the biggest steals in the first round, and other teams will quickly learn that.
Not only was it an incredible value, but Bryant fits perfectly into what the Spurs want to do. This offseason, the Spurs’ mission was to find more perimeter defense and three-point shooting; Bryant fills both of those needs. With his exceptionally lengthy and bulky frame, Bryant will instantly become one of the league’s top defenders.
While he didn’t get a heavy share of the offense at Arizona, Bryant’s work earned him more reps as the season went along, and he proved to be a capable scorer. The Spurs will look for the forward to continue his three-point development, with the hope that he will become a consistent outside weapon. Nonetheless, with his work ethic and perfect NBA physique, Bryant is a sure-fire prospect and will thrive within the Spurs’ infrastructure.
