The San Antonio Spurs are poised to take a leap in the Western Conference this season.
After failing to make the play-in tournament last season, the Spurs have their sights set on returning to the postseason picture this season.
The Spurs are considered a young team, with developing talents, but they also have a nice mix of veteran players as well.
If the Spurs are going to become a winner this season, they need the most out of their top players.
Here, NBA Analysis previews the three most exciting players on the Spurs roster to watch.
Dylan Harper was selected by the Spurs with the No. 2 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
If Harper wasn’t in the same draft class as Cooper Flagg, he could have gone as the No. 1 selection.
Harper enters the league as a proficient downhill scorer. His ability to finish at the rim is his best skill and he does a good job getting to the free throw line as well.
He will ease into the Spurs system as the rookie is expected to begin the season from off the bench. Harper has the size to play off guard and can even defend some wing players too.
The 19-year-old will be able to show his ability as a playmaker and thrive off-ball. His high basketball IQ, ability to slash, get out in the transition, and his ability to hit spot-up threes will give him minutes in the Spurs’ rotation out of the gate.
Harper will need to earn his playing time this season, but he will be able to give Spurs fans glimpses of what he can do as he promises to be the team’s point guard of the future.
De’Aaron Fox will enter his first full season with the Spurs.
Fox was acquired by the team at the trade deadline, but underwent season-ending surgery in March to repair tendon damage in his left pinkie.
However, the Spurs locked Fox up this summer, signing him to a four-year $229 million contract extension.
In 17 games for the Spurs last season, Fox averaged 19.7 points, 8.8 assists and 4.3 rebounds, but he did struggle to shoot the three at 27.4 percent.
The Spurs trading for Fox was seen as a win-now move as the former All-Star had many stellar campaigns with the Sacramento Kings, helping them end their playoff drought in 2023.
Fox will undoubtedly get the most minutes at point guard this season and his fit with the Spurs’ biggest star looks promising.
Victor Wembanyama had an incredible sophomore season with the Spurs, before his season was cut short due to a blood clot issue.
Fortunately, Wembanyama has recovered and has engaged in workouts this offseason. He will be ready to go for the start of the 2025-26 NBA season.
The 21-year-old is coming off a season which saw him average 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 3.8 blocks across 46 games.
He was virtually a lock to win the Defensive Player of the Year award had he reached the 65-game minimum required for consideration.
Wembanyama should average north of 25 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks per game this season.
San Antonio’s unicorn is poised to have a big year, one that could not only land the Spurs back in the playoffs but also get him in MVP conversations.
