'This slap on the wrist is an absolute miscarriage of justice' - When Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's son received a light sentence for stabbing a neighbor over trash cans

In 2020, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's son Adam stabbed his then 60-year-old neighbor after an argument over garbage. The man, Raymond Winsor, suffered injuries to his head, neck, back, and side as a result of the attack.

Prosecutors initially wanted a nine-year prison term for the NBA legend's son. Still, after Adam pleaded guilty to three counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of carrying a dagger in 2021, he received a six-month jail sentence, which was convertible to house detention. The light sentence prompted District Attorney Todd Spitzer to protest the verdict.

"This slap on the wrist is an absolute miscarriage of justice," Spitzer said. "This man nearly bled to death in front of the emergency room doors after being stabbed so violently over and over that his skull was fractured."

They argued over trash cans

Adam and Mr Winsor were next-door neighbors in San Clemente and shared a driveway. On that fateful day, Winsor confronted Abdul-Jabbar for failing to take in the trash can of his elderly roommate, who some reports say was his grandmother.

"I sort of got on him because the lady who takes care of him is 83-year-old," Winsor told ABC7 following the attack. "He doesn't do anything for her and it just bums me out - she's in a walker taking her trash cans down."

Windsor claims Adam shouted, "Shut your f***king mouth, I'm going to stick a knife through your teeth". He thought Abdul-Jabbar's threat was a joke because he knew him since he was a child but after Adam went inside his home, he came back with a knife and started stabbing him.

However, Adam's attorney disputed Winsor's version of the story. According to Shawn Holley, Winsor initiated the altercation, and although his client responded violently, Adam immediately contacted authorities after the incident.

"What isn't disputed is that Adam immediately called 911 and fully cooperated with law enforcement. The other party did not. Adam's account was bolstered by those who know both parties. In order to move on with his life, Adam agreed to plead guilty to 2 years probation and 180 days of house arrest."

Adam is the youngest of Kareem's five children and his only child, from ex-baby mama Julye Olds. Cap and his former wife Habiba had three children - Habiba Jr., Kareem Jr., and Sultana. Meanwhile, KAJ also has a son named Amir with ex-beau Cheryl Pistono. Kareem and his family have mostly stayed away from the limelight, and the stabbing incident involving Adam was one of the rare instances they made the news.
