Many wondered why the Thunder stood pat the trade deadline, refusing to pursue available players who could have helped them in the playoffs. The answer is simple: OKC was awaiting the return of Chet Holmgren, who missed three months of the season with a pelvic fracture.
Unlike other teams that had to look elsewhere, the Thunder had an ace up their sleeve in Holmgren, who made an instant impact upon his return from injury. However, the franchise didn't let the 7-footer go full-blast through his first few games, keeping him on a minutes restriction.
All that changed on Wednesday as Holmgren played over 30 minutes for the first time since his return, looking every bit like the player who challenged Victor Wembanyama for Rookie of the Year honors last year. The Gonzaga alum stuffed the stat sheet in his team's 129-121 win over the Nets, including a career-high 17 rebounds, to make franchise history.

The Thunder needed every bit of Holmgren's production. Entering the second half, OKC was down by 15 points, a rare occurrence of Mark Daigneault's team facing a double-digit deficit this year. Holmgren was a team-high +25 in the second half as OKC outscored Brooklyn 68-45 through the final 24 minutes to seal the deal.
As Holmgren grows more comfortable, the Thunder must feel optimistic about the final leg of the 2024-25 season. Many believe Holmgren's ability to make threes and block shots will play a key role in OKC's pursuit of a deep postseason run. ESPN's Kendrick Perkins has already referred to the 7-footer as the "X factor" in this year's playoffs, and the biggest reason the Thunder can make a run to the NBA Finals.
In six games since his return, Holmgren is averaging 14.7 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.3 blocks at impressive 51/45/74 shooting splits.
