The Minnesota Timberwolves are once again expected to compete in a loaded Western Conference in the 2025–26 season, coming off back-to-back trips to the Western Conference Finals. The Timberwolves will be led by emerging superstar Anthony Edwards, now playing in his sixth NBA season.

The former first overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft has continued to take strides as his career progresses. Edwards earned a third straight All-Star selection last season and finished in the top 10 of MVP voting for the second consecutive year. Edwards averaged 27.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.2 steals while shooting 44.7% from the field and a career-best 39.5% from three-point range. His improved shooting has made him a versatile threat, capable of attacking the basket and consistently scoring from deep.

As Edwards begins his sixth season, his availability has become a concern. He appeared on the injury report as a questionable game-time decision for the regular season opener due to back spasms. However, his momentum came to a halt during Saturday’s game against the Indiana Pacers because of a different issue.

With 8:52 left in the first quarter, Edwards was removed from the game, with Bones Hyland entering in his place. Concern mounted quickly, as Edwards had only played three minutes before heading to the locker room while grabbing at his right leg. The Timberwolves ruled him out moments later for the remainder of the contest with right hamstring tightness. “Anthony Edwards (Right Hamstring Tightness) will NOT return to tonight’s game,” the team announced on X.

With Edwards sidelined, the Timberwolves will likely lean on Hyland to continue logging more minutes in the backcourt, especially with Rob Dillingham also out due to a nasal fracture.

This is an unfortunate development for Minnesota, as the offense runs through Edwards and his ability to create good looks for his teammates. A relentless competitor with elite athleticism and sharp instincts, Edwards has become the engine of the Timberwolves. He sets the tone with his leadership, shot creation and defensive intensity, often drawing the toughest assignments while carrying the scoring load.

Few players in the league match his blend of physicality, confidence and ability to elevate in big moments. His availability will continue to be monitored. Edwards' next opportunity to suit up for the Timberwolves will be on Monday against the Denver Nuggets, if he bounces back quickly.
