Shooting guard Anthony Edwards is entering his sixth season with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Since being selected first overall in the 2020 NBA Draft, Edwards has quickly become the face of the franchise and one of the league’s rising stars. He finished runner-up in Rookie of the Year voting and has since earned three consecutive All-Star selections, two straight All-NBA honors and placed in the top ten of MVP voting each of the past two seasons.

In 2024–25, Edwards appeared in 79 games and posted career highs with 27.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, along with 4.5 assists. He shot 44.7% from the field and an impressive 39.5% from three-point range. Edwards has continued to grow as a playmaker and remains Minnesota’s top scoring option, capable of creating his own shot, attacking the rim and generating quality looks for teammates while being a consistent threat from deep.

As Edwards ramped up his workload ahead of Wednesday’s regular season opener against the Portland Trail Blazers, the Timberwolves announced his status is now uncertain.

“Minnesota @Timberwolves Status Report in advance of tomorrow’s game at Portland: AVAILABLE Zikarsky – Face Mask QUESTIONABLE Edwards – Back Spasms,” the team posted on X. Edwards missed the final preseason game, initially believed to be for rest, but the back spasms are a new development and will be monitored closely. His availability is critical to Minnesota’s success.

Edwards has led the Timberwolves to back-to-back Western Conference Finals appearances but is still chasing his first trip to the NBA Finals. With much of the core returning, Minnesota remains a top contender in the West, and Edwards will once again be at the center of their championship push.

Edwards’ ability to take over games, especially in crunch time, gives the Timberwolves a clear edge against top-tier competition. With the Western Conference as deep as ever, Minnesota will need Edwards at full strength to keep pace with contenders like the Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder.

His presence also elevates the play of teammates like Donte DiVincenzo and Naz Reid, who benefit from the spacing and attention Edwards commands on offense. Whether or not he suits up on opening night, his importance to the Timberwolves is undeniable.
