Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards out two weeks with hamstring strain

The Timberwolves will be without their superstar for a while. Anthony Edwards is expected to miss about two weeks with a right hamstring strain, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Edwards left Sunday’s game against the Pacers after just three minutes, grabbing at his leg and never returning. The team described it as tightness at first, but further testing revealed the strain.

The timing isn’t ideal. Edwards was off to a blistering start — 41 points in a win over Portland and 31 in a loss to the Lakers — as Minnesota’s offense continued to revolve around his shot creation and physicality.

The Wolves face Denver tonight in the second half of a back-to-back and have seven more games over the next two weeks, meaning Edwards will likely miss at least eight contests before being reevaluated.

With Edwards out, Julius Randle slid into the lead scoring role Sunday, while Mike Conley, Jaylen Clark, Terrence Shannon Jr., and Bones Hyland all saw expanded minutes off the bench. Expect coach Chris Finch to rely on a rotation-by-committee approach to fill the void.

Edwards has been one of the NBA’s most durable stars, playing 79 games in each of the past three seasons and 72 in each of his first two.

The Wolves will now have to figure out how to keep pace in the West without their engine for the first time in years.
