Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch has had a relationship with forward Julius Randle since before he was traded to the team.
Finch was an assistant coach/associate head coach on the New Orleans Pelicans from 2017 to 2020. Randle spent the 2018-19 season in New Orleans before he was traded to New York.
Since then, the former 7th-overall pick has improved in all aspects, but one part of his game has stood out to his coach above the others.
When asked about Randle's growth as a defender, Finch praised the 30-year-old's improvement.
“To me, the most impressive growth (Randle’s defense) for him. He can execute a variety of coverages, but really just his on-ball competitiveness and ability to contain is (at) a super high level right now."
Overall, the Kentucky product is having the best playoff run of his career. Through two playoff series, consisting of 10 total games, Randle is averaging 24 points, six assists, and six rebounds a game on 62% true shooting.
The Timberwolves have relied on him heavily this postseason, and he has delivered in crucial moments.
Randle's improvement on the defensive side of the ball from his time in New Orleans with Finch was significant to Minnesota's head coach.
"In New Orleans, he (Randle) didn’t feel as comfortable as he is now in a lot of things that we’re asking him to do," Finch added. “I see him as an impactful defensive player, a plus defender.”
Randle, along with the rest of Minnesota's physical and elite defense, will face their toughest test yet in the Western Conference Finals as they travel to Oklahoma City to face Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder.
Finch's trust in Randle and the rest of his Timberwolves roster is evident, as they are now just four wins away from their first NBA Finals appearance in team history.
