Timberwolves expected to revisit Giannis trade talks this offseason

The Timberwolves may not be done chasing the biggest name on the market.

Minnesota is expected to pursue a trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo again this offseason, according to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.

That interest isn’t new. The Timberwolves explored the possibility at the trade deadline. This time, though, the situation could be different.

“The Bucks are expected to entertain offers … with a seriousness that they did not have in February,” Krawczynski wrote, adding that president of basketball operations Tim Connelly is likely to re-engage while surveying other options.

In other words, this could be real.

Minnesota knocked off Denver in the first round before falling to San Antonio in the semifinals. Still, the need is obvious. Another star alongside Anthony Edwards could be what pushes the Timberwolves into true contender status.

Antetokounmpo would check every box.

The Bucks, meanwhile, appear to be at a crossroads. After winning the 2021 title, Milwaukee has managed just one playoff series victory since and missed the postseason this year for the first time in nearly a decade.

Now, there’s a growing sense around the league that both sides may be ready for something different.

Antetokounmpo, a two-time MVP and future Hall of Famer, has spent his entire career in Milwaukee. He’s still performing at an elite level, averaging 24.1 points, 9.9 rebounds and 5.0 assists for his career.

The price, of course, would be steep. The contract is massive. The competition will be fierce, with several teams expected to show interest.

But for Minnesota, the idea is simple. If Giannis is truly available, you at least make the call.
