Timberwolves’ Jonathan Kuminga sends first message after Minnesota arrival

Jonathan Kuminga is raring to have a fresh start with the Minnesota Timberwolves after signing a two-year contract worth $12.4 million in free agency. The change of scenery should serve Kuminga well, who could be the final piece in the Timberwolves’ quest to make it to the NBA Finals for the first time.

Many thought Kuminga found a new home with the Atlanta Hawks last season after a tumultuous stint with the Golden State Warriors. The Hawks, however, declined to pick up his team option. Minnesota took interest in the 23-year-old forward, with Anthony Edwards even helping in the recruitment.

On Monday, Kuminga arrived in Minnesota and sent a short message.

“Wolves fans, this is JK here. Just landed in Minneapolis. I’m excited to get here and get to work. See you guys soon,” said the high-flying wingman.

Kuminga is expected to be the sixth man for the Timberwolves, joining Terrence Shannon Jr., Jaylen Clark, Joan Beringer, and Bones Hyland in the second unit. He has a path to becoming a starter, possibly taking the spot of Ayo Dosunmu, but he has to improve his defensive awareness, which is a non-negotiable for coach Chris Finch.

With the tandem of Edwards and LaMelo Ball, Minnesota could play a more high-octane offense, which would be perfect for Kuminga.

Last season, he averaged 12.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists in 23.1 minutes. He was limited to 36 games due to various injuries and rotation issues.

The Timberwolves will start their training camp on September 22. They will begin their new season against the Miami Heat on October 21.
