Top free agents the Suns should target in 2025 free agency

The Phoenix Suns have had the busiest offseason in the NBA. The franchise shipped off 15-time All-Star Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets for a package consisting of Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks and more. General manager Brian Gregory then addressed the center issue by selecting Khaman Maluach 10th overall and traded for Charlotte Hornets center Mark Williams. The next order of business is free agency, which will be Gregory’s toughest challenge yet with the team still over the second apron.

Regardless of the cap limitations, Phoenix could try and grab these free agents for next year’s roster to make a triumph return into the playoffs.

Who the Suns should target:

The Suns will need to target a point guard, as the roster consist of five guards, all of which classified as shooting guards. There is a lack of playmaking in the guard rotation and this free agency class have viable options. Gregory could bring back Tyus Jones, who had a solid season of 10.2 points and 5.3 assists in 81 games, or go with a reunion with former Phoenix guard Cameron Payne from the New York Knicks.

The pair of guards will likely seek minimum deals, which fit in the franchise’s budget. Collin Gillespie could be another returner that answers the team’s point guard problem, as the 26-year-old was a massive spark plug for the roster late in the season. Gillespie averaged 5.9 points and 2.4 assists in 33 appearances.

Another reunion could be 40-year-old Chris Paul, with reports indicating that he wants to be near Los Angeles next season. Phoenix is as close to L.A. without being there and would make sense with Paul and Devin Booker’s relationship. Paul didn’t leave the franchise in the best of terms, with him being traded. However, Paul could rewrite his time with the Suns for one final run with the team.

The Suns need more length in the forward position. Gregory could seek out 6’11 Arizona native Marvin Bagley. The former No. 2 overall pick hasn’t found his footing in the league, via injuries or defensive struggles, but has the talented offensively to warrant the franchise to take a shot with the 26-year-old.

A dream scenario for the Suns would be to grabbed an experienced forward like Larry Nance Jr. or Torey Craig. Each are winning players and would bring something different to the roster. Nance is one of the most underrated paint defenders in the league and still shot 44.7% from beyond the arc on 3.2 attempts last season. Craig has similar strength from the 3-point line, shooting 39%, and uses his 6’7 frame on the perimeter to be an efficient defender.

Phoenix doesn’t have much money to throw around, but can offer opportunity and minutes to many players in free agency. Gregory will need to be smart and work around the team’s limit cap space to add to a team next year that doesn’t have their first-round pick and needs to win now.
