The Portland Trail Blazers will miss the playoffs this season for the fourth straight campaign. The franchise hasn't made the postseason since 2021.

Hall of Famer Chauncey Billups became the head coach of the Blazers in 2021. The one-time NBA champion with the Detroit Pistons hasn't had much success in Portland. He has a winning percentage of .355.

However, Portland's ownership group is impressed with how Billups is developing the team, so much so that the franchise announced big news on Sunday.

The Blazers have agreed to a multi-year contract extension with Billups.

"The core of Chauncey’s leadership is his ability to build a collaborative culture and growth mindset for our young team,” Jody Allen, chair of the Blazers, said. "We’re very happy to extend his contract as head coach, and excited to see his continued work developing our players and transforming this team into one capable of long-term success."

“Chauncey Billups is a great leader, motivator and communicator that has worked tirelessly to establish an identity for this team that has taken shape over his time in Portland,” Blazers general manager Joe Cronin said. “I am beyond excited to continue this partnership with Chauncey and take this team to the next level.”

The Blazers finish their season on Sunday against the Los Angeles Lakers at home. They enter the Lakers game with a record of 35-46.

“I want to thank Jody Allen, Bert Kolde and Joe Cronin for their belief in me as we all progress on this journey of creating a sustained winner for years to come," Billups said. “We are building this team the right way with a defensive-minded, hard-nosed, competitive culture. I look forward to continuing to give Rip City fans a product on the court that they can be proud of and cheer for every night.”

Portland is 22nd in the NBA in points per game, 15th in points per game allowed, 23rd in offensive rating, 17th in defensive rating and 23rd in net rating this season under Billups.

The oldest player on the Blazers is Jerami Grant (30). Billups is coaching a young team, so it may be a while before Portland contends again.
