During a recent Instagram story, U.S. women’s national team star Trinity Rodman addressed two recurring issues that have clearly been weighing on her, one public, the other deeply personal.
The USWNT and Washington Spirit forward is currently recovering from a back injury she sustained in late April. With the NWSL season already over and the next one set to begin in August, Trinity has been spending time at Wimbledon, supporting her boyfriend, professional tennis player Ben Shelton.
Her frequent appearances in the stands alongside Shelton’s family have drawn attention on social media, prompting her to speak up and clarify two things.
First, she addressed a surprisingly persistent mistake:
“For those who don’t know… my name is TRINITY not Tiffany” — Trinity Rodman via Instagram Story
But the second part of her post carried more weight. It was a clear message about personal boundaries and public narratives — especially involving family.
Trinity responded to people comparing her situation to that of Ben Shelton, whose father, tennis legend Bryan Shelton, is a visible and supportive presence at his matches:
“Also, for Ben’s matches he has his family there as his support system, which includes his dad… my dad’s not even in MY life. No need to bring him up during HIS matches when I don’t even want him talked about during mine. It’s him and his loved ones’ moment. Thank you.” — Trinity Rodman via Instagram Story
It was a rare and honest statement that reinforced her desire to protect her emotional space and Ben’s, from constant comparisons and projections tied to her famous last name.
Once again can the media leave Trinity Rodman alone and stop bringing up her dad for everything lol pic.twitter.com/t28O7a4zrk

The former basketball star has had little to no relationship with his daughter — a reality Trinity has openly discussed in past interviews.
On the Call Her Daddy podcast, she was direct about the pain and distance between them:
“He’s not a dad. Maybe by blood, but nothing else. Hearing his voice is painful,” — Trinity Rodman on Call Her Daddy podcast.
While she's been clear about the lack of a bond, Trinity has also made it clear that she’s building her own legacy, one rooted in her own work, not her father’s.
She’s shown, time and again, that her identity as an athlete, and as a person — stands fully on its own.
