Tyrese Haliburton has injured his right calf during the NBA Finals. This injury occurred during Game 5 of the NBA Finals. Unfortunately for Haliburton, the calf injury was sustained on the same leg where he was already experiencing ankle soreness. Ahead of Game 6 of the NBA Finals, the All-Star point guard will be a game-time decision.
During Game 2, Tyrese Halliburton appeared to favor his left leg during a forceful drive to the rim, which was the first indication of difficulty. He played through it, dismissing inquiries after the game, but everyone watching could see the limp. Game 5 was where the real danger started.
Halliburton reaggravated the injury less than five minutes into the first quarter. He continued to play the game, although his motions were strained. He concluded the game with just four points and a 0-for-6 shooting percentage, which is his lowest total of the postseason.
The Thunder’s defense took full advantage, renowned for its swarming defense. Halliburton’s trademark floater failed to work because of a lack of separation, which prevented it from breaking opponents off the dribble. On closeouts, he frequently lagged and had trouble even with simple transition plays. Haliburton’s struggles were on display and a focus of the Thunder.
T.J. McConnell, the backup point guard, stepped up and helped close the difference by bringing intensity into the fourth quarter. Despite the intensity and energy he brings, the club was unable to compensate for the injury to their playmaker.
Tyrese Haliburton has made it known that he is going to do whatever it takes to play in Game 6. Head coach Rick Carlisle said Wednesday morning. “He is going to be carefully evaluated over the next thirty-six hours and will likely be listed as questionable on the injury report,” Carlisle said in an appearance on Indianapolis radio station 107.5 The Fan. Carlisle also stated, “We have to prepare for two scenarios: one where he plays and one where he does not.”
Heading into Game 6 of the NBA Finals, the Thunder are in control of the series, leading 3-2. They will have an opportunity to close out the series and win the NBA title. The NBA’s best team throughout the entire season will look to take advantage of a hobbled Pacers team one last time.
Without or with Tyrese Haliburton, the Pacers will make it a fight until the end. If Haliburton can play and resemble himself partially, that would be a game-changer. However, if he cannot play, things may get even harder to tie up the series.
