Tyronn Lue lined himself up for a nice promotion at work. He is reportedly set to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers, after Andy Miller, Lue's representative, managed to complete negotiations with the team Thursday on a five-year deal.
Lue has long been the leading candidate to take over as Clippers head coach after Los Angeles parted ways with Doc Rivers last month. Lue has not been a head coach in nearly two years since he was fired by the Cleveland Cavaliers just six games into the season. He then joined the Clippers as an assistant coach and now will take over the reins from Rivers.
Jeff Van Gundy, Sam Cassell and Mike D'Antoni also were named as potential hires for the Clippers, but in the end, Lue managed to secure perhaps the most highly coveted open coaching position in the NBA.
Even with all the talent in L.A., Lue will have a tough task ahead of him. Regardless of what Paul George says, the Clippers are undoubtedly in "championship or bust" mode for the upcoming season. If the Clippers disappoint in the playoffs again, Kawhi Leonard and Paul George could opt out of their contracts after the season, forcing Los Angeles to rebuild with little in the way of draft capital.
