MIAMI FL — USA Basketball is expected to name Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra it’s new head coach.
Spoelstra will succeed Steve Kerr, who became the head coach following Gregg Popovich’s run. There has been long been rumors that Kerr’s tenure would be for just one Olympic run after coaching the Team USA to a gold medal in the 2024 games.
Spoelstra, who has won two NBA championships as the head coach of the Heat and led the franchise to six NBA Finals appearances, is the longest-tenured coach in the league. He has a lengthy resume with the Team USA program, winning a gold medal as a lead assistant under Kerr in 2024.
The Heat arguably have have a strongest history of any NBA franchise in terms of being involved in Team USA’s program. Tim Hardaway (2000), Alonzo Mourning (2000), LeBron James (2012), Dwyane Wade (2008) and Bam Adebayo (2020, 2024) all won Olympic Gold Medals for the United States Men’s National Team while playing for the Heat.
Spoelstra will be the head coach for the 2027 World Cup as well as 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California.
