Victor Wembanyama is one of those players who will be a constant in Fantasy Basketball IF he stays healthy, because his skill set is one of those freak skill sets, as he is now 7’5″ with elite shooting and a handle like a guard. Yeah, this is going to be a debate for the rest of time, of whether or not you pick Wembanyama or Nikola Jokic first in fantasy basketball drafts for the rest of Jokic’s career, and once Jokic retires, Wembanyama is going to be the undisputed No.1 fantasy player. If you don’t believe me, let’s dive into the 2025-26 Fantasy Outlook for Wemby, and I will show you the reason for the hype and potential.
Wembanyama averaged 24.3 fantasy points last season on 47.6% shooting from the field, while also averaging 11.0 rebounds and 3.8 blocks per game in 46 games played last season due to a blood clot in the shoulder shortly after the All-Star Break. Jokic, by far, had the better statistical season of the two with averaging a triple-double, but Wemby’s defense had him comparable with Jokic in Fantasy. So when you look at the projections like we’re about to for Wemby, keep that in mind with the defensive numbers, which will keep Wemby in contention for the No.1 pick in Fantasy.
ESPN has Wembanyama as the No. 1-ranked player in Fantay over Jokic in 2025-26 with the following projections: 24.7 points per game, 11.5 rebounds per game, 3.9 assists per game, 1.2 steals per game, and an outstanding 4.0 blocks per game. Even though ESPN is projecting Jokic to average a triple-double again but the defense of Wembanyama is taking him over the top in their rankings, which brings up the debates of what you should value.
I think both are great options with the No.1 pick, but I would agree with ESPN personally because the defense gives you upside if they have an off-shooting night by chance. Meanwhile, FantasyPros is projecting Wembanyama to have 1,763 points, 251 blocks, 773 rebounds, 279 assists, and 91 steals this season in 2,454 minutes.
If Wembanyama stays healthy, I think there is no doubt in my mind that he hits all of these thresholds and numbers, especially those defensive numbers. I also think that Wembanyama is going to be a catalyst for winning fantasy championships a bit more than Jokic because of the defense, but both are still amazing options with that No.1 selection. I also feel that Wemby is going to be a dark horse MVP candidate that could exceed his projections as well, but the health is going to be the crux of everything coming off that deep vein thrombosis in his shoulder last season. We shall see how it goes for the 2023-24 Rookie of the Year.
