Victor Wembanyama Analyzes Blazers’ Approach Following Playoff Series Win

Victor Wembanyama just gave a clear look into his mind after 1st round playoff win. His honest words reveal the team’s mindset as they chase a championship run.

The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 114-95 in Game 5. This win helped the Spurs take the series 4-1 overall. It also marked their first playoff series victory since the 2017 season. After the Game 5 win, Wembanyama shared his thoughts on the next challenge.

He said, “It was good, it was fun, but Portland is a pretty straightforward team. They are on one end of the spectrum of NBA teams, so it requires a lot of reserves to keep pushing through that, because they push you to an identity that might not be yours.”

“I’m excited to play against teams that will challenge more of the tactical, technical basketball aspect,” Wembanyama added.

He is pointing out the contrast in how both teams play. Portland depends on a direct and physical style, and San Antonio utilized their depth to control the tempo and maintain leads.

The final game scores back up his thought. San Antonio won the first game 111-98, dropped the second 103-106, and then rolled to 120-108, 114-93, and 114-95 victories.

The Spurs averaged a solid 112.4 points per game. Portland only managed to average 100.0 points across the 5 games.

Wembanyama posted 27 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 blocks in a Game 4 win. This great performance came right after he returned from concussion protocol.

He missed Game 3 due to those protocols. The Spurs consistently executed their plays better during the high-pressure moments.

Wembanyama knows the next round will test the Spurs in completely different ways.

San Antonio Spurs Getting Ready for More Complex Challenge

Wembanyama’s focus on the tactical and technical side of basketball sends a message. He understands that the challenge level is about to jump up.

The Wolves advance to the Western Conference Semifinals, where they will face the San Antonio Spurs in a fresh, best-of-seven series.

The Minnesota Timberwolves’ advanced defensive systems and half-court plays will slow the game down. Rudy Gobert is going to be the biggest challenge.

With that said, Rudy Gobert doesn’t seem any more excited than any other Wolves player to face the Spurs, especially with Victor Wembanyama in the mix.

“It’s another really strong team with a unique all-time player and a top-three MVP candidate, so it’s a great challenge, and we’re excited for it. That’s what I said about Jokic—as a competitor, that’s what you live for. It’s the same with Victor and the Spurs,” Gobert said.

The NBA playoffs will mark the first time that French basketball giants Gobert and Wembanyama will face each other.

The two players met only once during the regular season, with the Wolves taking the season series over the Spurs 2-1.
