Victor Wembanyama is reportedly considering a significant sacrifice to try to help the San Antonio Spurs continue to challenge for NBA titles.
Wembanyama is considering signing a rookie contract extension for less than maximum value to give the Spurs more financial flexibility, according to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line. He is eligible to sign a rookie scale extension this summer, and posted on X Friday that he is “here to stay” in San Antonio.
There has been word this morning in Las Vegas that Victor Wembanyama is considering signing less than his maximum rookie scale extension to provide San Antonio greater financial flexibility.

Wembanyama is eligible to sign a five-year, $251 million contract with the Spurs, though he can take less. Doing so would allow the Spurs to think ahead a bit, since the likes of Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle will become very expensive in a few years.
It is possible that Wembanyama took notice of Jalen Brunson, who gave the New York Knicks a significant discount on his most recent contract. That certainly paid off for him, as the Knicks just beat the Spurs to win the NBA title in part because of Brunson’s sacrifice.
While Wembanyama has some maturing to do, he clearly understands the importance of having a strong supporting cast around him. He should have no problem making a lot of money in his NBA career, so this would be a relatively modest sacrifice.
