For the first time this postseason, the San Antonio Spurs have their backs against the walls. Victor Wembanyama and co. will be facing elimination on Thursday night when the Oklahoma City Thunder visit San Antonio to try and close out the Spurs.
Wembanyama struggled in Game 5, finishing with 20 points and six rebounds, but shooting just 4-of-15 from the field and 0-of-5 from three as the Spurs star struggled to find a rhythm all night long. He did finish with two steals, three blocks, and shot 12-of-12 from the free throw line, but it wasn’t nearly enough on a night that De’Aaron Fox also shot 4-of-15 from the field, Devin Vassell shot 2-of-11, and Dylan Harper shot 1-of-5.
After the Game 5 loss, Wembanyama left Oklahoma City’s Paycom Center without speaking to members of the media, which the NBA issued a warning for on Wednesday morning.
Chris Bosh came away impressed with what the Thunder have done thus far in the series.
“The Thunder are getting to their game, the Spurs are not, and it’s costing them,” Bosh said in a video breakdown on Wednesday morning. “It’s majorly, majorly costing them right now. Oklahoma City, give all the credit where credit is due. They’re having one guy after another step up when it’s time to step up. I mean, come on. They’ve got two important players out right now, two huge contributors out right now, and the next guy comes up and the next guy comes up. Jared McCain, fantastic game yesterday. Comes in at the starting role and plays like a veteran. It’s really, really incredible to see Chet Holmgren’s answering the bell. Hartenstein is doing well. It seems that everybody that needs to do well when it’s time to do well for Oklahoma City, they get it done. Down two guys, I still I still can’t get that!”
A Hall-of-Famer, two-time NBA Champion, and 11-time NBA All-Star, Chris Bosh also had thoughts on what Victor Wembanyama needs to do to help his team and what the Spurs can do to help their star.
“The Spurs just are not capitalizing on their moment,” Bosh added. “They are not dominating the paint. They are deterring [Victor Wembanyama] from the basket. I love the step-back threes and all that stuff and you can hit them. But how many are you going to hit over the course of a series? He needs to get down in that paint and own it. Catch it 10-15 feet away from the basket. Give some post moves. Who’s going to stop it and San Antonio, they just need to get to their actions. I still don’t know what their actions that work are. I don’t think they know right now.”
Since losing a close Game 1 which they appeared to have control of at certain points late in the game, the Oklahoma City Thunder have won three of the last four games and hold a 3-2 series lead heading to San Antonio for Game 6. It will be the Spurs first game facing elimination this postseason after taking down the Portland Trail Blazers in five games and the Minnesota Timberwolves in six.
“And again, you got to give it to Oklahoma City. You got to give them credit for taking them out of the things that normally work for them because right now it just seems too random with the Spurs. They’re not getting the ball to certain spots. They’re not being efficient in what they need to do. I said yesterday they need to get Wemby in as many single-side screen-and-roles as possible. It seems that they didn’t do that. The things that give them success, they go away from. Now with Oklahoma City, they seem to have found a formula. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but they were going at Wemby in the pick and roll. Usually they have him spread out on the other side to maybe spray for three when they attack the paint. They’re starting to bring whoever Wemby is guarding into the screen and roll, especially with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and he’s being aggressive and attacking.”
Should the Spurs win Game 6, the two teams will play a decisive Game 7 back in Oklahoma City on Saturday night.
“That’s one game. They’re closer to elimination, the Spurs are. They’re going to have to show some major major urgency coming into this next Game 6. They’ve got to defend home-court. I’m not sure they can win Game 7 on the road. I said that was their Game 7. They needed to win that game. If it’s me, I don’t want to play a Game 7 in Oklahoma City, but tomorrow is another day. They’ve got to concentrate. They’ve got to protect home court. And we’ll see what happens if there’s a Game 7. You got to love it.”
