Even without their superstar, Victor Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs have been flying.

With Victor Wembanyama this season, the San Antonio Spurs are 9-3. Without him, they’re 8-3, fifth in the Western Conference, and through to the NBA Cup semi-final.

If you were asking whether the Spurs had enough around the Frenchman to compete for the title, your question has been answered emphatically. De’Aaron Fox has led this team without Wembanyama, keeping them in contention in a highly competitive Western Conference.

But to go all the way, they need Wembanyama back from a left calf strain that has ruled him out for a month. Standing at 7’4”, injury concerns have always surrounded the 21-year-old, but some positive news appears to have come from the Spurs’ camp on that front.

Mitch Johnson outlines plan for Victor Wembanyama return

There’s some crucial games coming up in the Spurs’ schedule, including a Cup semi-final, and potentially a final, in Las Vegas.

San Antonio’s Head Coach, Mitch Johnson, was asked if Wembanyama could make his return from injury on Thursday against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Cup, and he confirmed that it’s a real possibility.

He said, “Very much so. He had a very good day today. He had a good intent day this morning, and we’ll have to see how he responds and reacts tomorrow.”

That’s huge news for the Spurs, as they’ll need Wembanyama in the lineup if they stand any chance of beating the 24-1 Thunder.

He’ll likely be on a minutes restriction as they ease him back to health, but Wembanyama is the ultimate X-factor against a dominant team like the Thunder.

But as he is set to make his return in the near future, one big question mark still hangs over the Spurs’ season.

The question that still needs answering for the San Antonio Spurs

Before Wembanyama’s injury, Fox came under fire from Spurs fans for his seeming inability to play second fiddle to his superstar teammate.

Fox was traded to the Spurs from the Sacramento Kings last season, and he’s proved worth his weight in gold with Wembanyama out with injury. Fox is averaging 24 points and 6.3 assists per game this season, and had a 37-point game earlier in the year.

Do you care about the NBA Cup?

“Yeah, that’s how I was. The first few, I was like, ‘Oh my god, come on.’ But I was like that with the Play-In game, too. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, what are we doing?’

“But you’ve got to give Adam and the decision-makers a lot of credit for trying to find ways to be creative and to help add to the energy of the game.

“With both of those things, the Play-In game and the cup, they have done a tremendous job.”

But what we haven’t seen from the Spurs is a consistent run with both Wembanyama and Fox on the court together. Since Fox was traded to San Antonio, the two teams have played 9 games, and San Antonio is 4-5.

They clearly need time to build on-court chemistry, and the Spurs will hope that now it the opportunity for that to happen. This is a key stretch for Fox to prove that he’s malleable enough to not be the number one option on this contending team.
