Victor Wembanyama entered the 2025-26 season as one of the NBA’s early MVP frontrunners, building on what was expected to be a major bounce-back campaign after his 2024-25 season was cut short by a blood-clot diagnosis. Before his latest setback, the San Antonio Spurs star appeared poised to deliver on those expectations.
Through 12 games, he averaged 26.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.6 blocks per game, establishing himself as one of the league’s most dominant two-way forces and the driving presence behind San Antonio’s hopeful resurgence.
That start was halted when the Spurs announced he had suffered a calf injury, sidelining him and pausing one of the NBA’s most compelling early-season storylines.
Even while out, Wembanyama has remained firmly in the league’s spotlight, as the NBA world continues to monitor the superstar big man’s status.
This week, however, brought unwelcome news for fans hoping to see more of him off the court. On Tuesday, Sports Business Journal reported that Netflix is moving toward canceling its NBA docuseries “Starting 5.” The decision follows two seasons that featured notable stars like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and reigning league MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. However, the show failed to hit the long-term viewership marks the platform expected.
The cancellation is significant because Netflix had reportedly targeted Wembanyama to headline a revamped third season, positioning him as the show’s featured star. With the series now shelved, the opportunity to showcase behind-the-scenes access to one of the league’s fastest-rising talents has disappeared.

For many NBA fans, the news is disappointing. Wembanyama has quickly become one of the sport’s most marketable young players, widely viewed as a future face of the league. A documentary centered around his development and return from injury likely would have drawn major interest.
Fans of the 2024 Rookie of the Year will now hope he makes a swift return to the basketball court, with the Spurs eagerly waiting for him to resume his role as the cornerstone of their long-term rebuild once healthy.
