The rivalry between Víctor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren has been developing since the 2023-24 season.
Holmgren was drafted in 2022, but he did not make his debut for the OKC Thunder until a year later, the same time as Wembanyama.
The two big men competed for the Rookie of the Year award, which Wembanyama won unanimously, and they have been compared to each other ever since.
Their matchups have always been competitive, and Wembanyama, especially, has often added fuel to the fire with his behavior towards Chet.
They are now expected to have an intense rivalry throughout their NBA careers, but Wembanyama will soon have a greater adversary.
NBA Analysis explains why the San Antonio Spurs center will face more competition from Cooper Flagg than Holmgren.
Even though Chet Holmgren is a champion and future All-Star, there is no comparison between him and Victor Wembanyama.
Wemby is almost two years younger than the Thunder star, and he is already a better offensive and defensive player.
Most people agree that Wembanyama will lead the Spurs to a title one day, whereas Holmgren is a second or third option.

Instead, Wemby’s greatest rival will be Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg, evidenced by the 18-year-old’s remarkable rookie season.
After a slow start to his NBA career, Flagg has now grown in confidence, averaging over 20 points per game in December.
He just had his best game yet, putting up prime LeBron James-like numbers (42 points, six rebounds, and seven assists) against the Utah Jazz.
The youngest player in the league could even make an All-Star appearance in February if he continues on the same trajectory.
Flagg is significantly shorter than Wembanyama, so they may not have many in-game battles, but they could be competing for MVPs and titles for the next decade.

The other 29 NBA teams will be hoping that Cooper Flagg does not continue to improve at the same rate he has developed already this season.
After scoring 13 points per game on 41% field goal efficiency in October, he is now averaging 24 points on 54% shooting in December.
| Month | Games | Points | Rebounds | Assists | Steals | Blocks | FG% |
| October | 5 | 13.4 | 6.2 | 2.8 | 0.8 | 0.6 | 41.0 |
| November | 14 | 17.8 | 6.7 | 3.7 | 1.5 | 0.6 | 47.7 |
| December | 6 | 24.2 | 5.5 | 3.8 | 1.2 | 1.2 | 53.5 |
Flagg still has plenty of things to work on, including his lackluster three-point shooting, but there are signs that he will be a special player.
It seems that the 18-year-old is even beginning to learn how to win in the NBA, as the Mavericks have won five of their last seven games.
Indeed, as long as Kyrie Irving makes a successful return from injury, it would not be that surprising if the Mavs won a playoff series.
