It was not even close. The NBA Rookie of the Year award has long been decided but has just been made official. Victor Wembanyama was in a class of his own. Players like Brandon Miller, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and even Chet Holmgren did not stand a chance against the San Antonio Spurs superstar and it was quite evident. Gregg Popovich’s mentee absolutely crushed the competition and fans were loving it.

Victor Wembanaya now joins an exclusive list of players who have won the NBA Rookie of the Year honor unanimously. The other players on that list? Well, it is safe to say that they too had legendary careers. His fellow Spurs legend David Robinson alongside Ralph Sampson, Blake Griffin, and Karl-Anthony Towns were the only individuals who have ever achieved the feat. This is a good sign for the young prodigy. Everyone sees how much trouble the league will be in once he hits his prime too.

“Never seen anything like it! Congrats to Victor! ROTY!” was a popular declaration making rounds on the internet.

Some fans were ecstatic about how good the Spurs are at handling the first overall pick, “Just like the previous #1 picks of the Spurs. Wemby makes it 3/3! Congrats Victor Wembanyama on winning Rookie of The Year. Looking forward to seeing more of his brilliance as he leads the future of the Spurs.”

Others were already making bold declarations after he notched this NBA award, “Wemby will be consensus top 10 in the league, putting up near MVP level stats by the end of the 2025 season, come back to me when I’m right.”

Avid spectators of the league were also just happy that the future was bright but also uncertain in a good way, “Pretty incredible that this is all basically ground zero for Wemby. We have no idea *exactly* how good he’ll be in his prime, we just know he’ll be great.”

The votes were very lopsided and favored Gregg Popovich’s mentee. He notched 99 first-place votes which amounted to a big total of 495 points. Oklahoma City Thunder big man Chet Holmgren came in at second by garnering 98 second-place votes and a single third-place vote. All of which gave him a grand total of 295 points in the NBA Rookie of the Year race. Brandon Miller of the Charlotte Hornets came in at third. He notched one second-place vote and 83 third-place votes for 86 points.

Others who also got a vote were Miami Heat’s Jaime Jaquez Jr. who got 10 points, Brandin Podziemski of the Golden State Warriors who notched four points, and the Dallas Mavericks’ athletics big man who scored a point.

What makes the Spurs rookie different? Aside from the fact that he is a freak of nature, his numbers spoke for himself. He led the league in blocks by recording 3.6 of them for the season. This got him in the running for the Defensive Player of the Year nod too. But, the most important thing to note is that he is the first player in league history to record 1,500 points, 700 rebounds, 250 assists, 250 blocks, and 100 three-pointers in a regular season campaign.

If those numbers don’t convince someone that Gregg Popovich’s Spurs got next, they might just need to get their eyes checked.
