Walker Kessler: Luka Doncic Is ‘Pretty Clear’ MVP

As the first half wound down between the Los Angeles Lakers and Portland Trail Blazers, Walker Kessler set a brush screen for Luka Doncic, who launched a three-quarter court shot at the buzzer and drilled it.

In a half where the Lakers shot 4-for-23 from the 3-point line, Doncic’s heroics willed the Lakers back as they went on to take control in the second half. After the win, Kessler discussed the shot that propelled L.A. into a dominant third quarter against Portland.

“Yeah, I mean for sure. I mean, when you got a guy that can make shots like that, it’s really exciting, it’s fun basketball to watch,” Kessler said. “But obviously that wasn’t the only shot he made and honestly, the second one he shot, I thought was going in too. But obviously when he’s playing well, we’re playing well, so.”

Doncic is now averaging 40.1 points following Friday’s 53-point performance and the Lakers center backed his guy in the early-season MVP debate.

“I mean yeah, I’m biased obviously. Yeah, I mean he’s averaging what? 38? Or something ridiculous, 40. There you go, okay,” Kessler continued. “Yeah, I mean he’s incredible to watch, he’s incredible to play alongside. He’s my MVP, I think it’s pretty clear right now.”

A reporter mentioned Kessler’s screen that freed up Doncic for the ridiculous shot, which the big man appreciated.

“I appreciate you pointing that out, thank you,” he joked. “Yeah, I saw it and I was like, ‘Wow, that might be going in.’ Yeah, he also works on those shots like in practice and stuff. So, it was an incredible shot, for sure.”

As the Lakers enter this new era of basketball, there was no debate about it being Doncic’s team. To his credit, the Slovenian star is embracing this new chapter and clearly looks to be the part.

Some form of regression will hit eventually, and seeing how this Lakers team responds to those bouts of adversity should be intriguing to watch. However, Kessler and company can continue playing alongside greatness until that time comes.

Walker Kessler appreciates support from Lakers fans

New situations can be daunting for players, especially stepping into a spotlight like Los Angeles. But Kessler is enjoying his time with the Lakers and gave a shoutout to the fanbase for welcoming him and treating him nicely when he is out in public.

When the team is winning, vibes are high and hopefully those good times keep rolling.
