Warriors have begun extension talks with star veteran

Klay Thompson is entering the final year of his $189.3 million contract. The veteran guard has slowly been inching back to his pre-injury production level. Last season, Thompson shot 41.2% from 3-point range, though he struggled to make a big impact defensively.

Nevertheless, when speaking on a recent episode of "The Lowe Post," ESPN's Ramona Shelburne reported the Golden State Warriors have opened contract negotiations. At 33, the contract will likely be Thompson's final big deal.

"My understanding is that they have opened contract extension talks with Klay Thompson," Shelburne said. "There's no hurry to these discussions. The optionality goes both ways. Not necessarily he's trying to leave, but just the optionality that he didn't have a great year last year. It behooves him to have a great year this year and he becomes more valuable if he does."

Golden State was in a similar situation last season. Draymond Green was in the final year of his contract. Yet, the front office waited until the offseason to agree to terms on a $100 million extension. For the Warriors, waiting until the season ends makes sense. It gives both sides some additional bargaining power based on recent production. And it also allows everybody to focus on the task at hand.

Thompson may never reach his previous level. However, that doesn't mean he can't be an elite three-and-d wing. If Thompson can improve his perimeter defense and continue to knock down his threes at a high clip, a significant contract will be waiting for him. Thompson has spent his entire career with the Warriors. It's unlikely either party wants to see that partnership come to an end.

It might not be straight away, but there's no reason to believe Thompson and the Warriors won't reach an agreement on a new deal.
