Warriors have decided they need to ‘reimagine’ themselves

The Warriors apparently looked at 37 wins and decided running it back exactly the same way probably isn’t the answer.

Imagine that.

Coach Steve Kerr says Golden State intends to play differently this season, with more five-out lineups, fewer turnovers and even a somewhat different role for Draymond Green.

“We have to reimagine our team this year,” Kerr said, via Danny Emerman of The San Francisco Standard⁠. “We can’t be 28th in turnovers. We have to be more efficient. We have to win the possession battle. We have to win the game in the margins.”

That includes Green. Kerr said he and Green have discussed not only changing the team, but “reimagining the way he plays.”

Golden State wants to use more five-out lineups, which could leave Green on the perimeter more frequently. Kerr wants him taking open threes, crashing the glass, setting up dribble handoffs and generally resisting the urge to attempt some of those ambitious passes that occasionally end up going the other way.

“We’re playing a more modern brand of basketball now, five-out,” Kerr said.

Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford should help make it possible as shooting big men, though Porzingis’ latest health issue complicates matters considerably.

The Warriors aren’t throwing away everything that made them the Warriors. But after going 37-45? They’re apparently done pretending nothing needs to change.
