The Golden State Warriors have made it clear they will not be trading two of their core players as part of any potential deal involving Jonathan Kuminga.
Kuminga’s situation has become the main talking point of the Warriors’ offseason. Both sides are still trying to find common ground on a new contract, but progress has been slow.
The team put a $45 million offer on the table, but the player turned it down. Even without other offers, he hasn’t backed away from his stance.
One sticking point was Kuminga’s refusal to give up his no-trade clause as part of a new deal with the team.
There is also talk that he wants around $30 million per year, which is another factor in why things haven’t moved forward.
Kuminga’s time with Golden State seems to be nearing an end, and while a trade looks likely, two players have already been ruled out of any potential move.
Brett Siegel of Clutch Points has reported that the Warriors might be open to a sign-and-trade deal with the Sacramento Kings involving Kuminga.
But when it comes to meeting the salary requirements, Golden State are not willing to include either Buddy Hield or Moses Moody just to bring in Malik Monk.
“The main roadblock is matching Kuminga’s outgoing salary and remaining under the first apron, which would force them to part ways with either Moses Moody or Buddy Hield if they were to bring in Monk.
“This isn’t something Golden State has any interest in doing, as they view Moody as an essential secondary contributor who can fill many roles in Kerr’s daily rotations, sources said.
“Trading Moody is not a path the Warriors want to go down at this time, especially given their lack of wing depth, as reported when discussing the latest Kuminga news with my good friend Allen Stiles at Sactown Sports 1140 on Friday.”
Brett Siegel also reported that the Warriors have stepped away from sign-and-trade talks, preferring to bring Kuminga back on a short-term contract. The goal is to potentially move him later when his value could be higher.
“No movement has been made from the Warriors’ point of view on the Kings’ latest offer, and the Dubs have put more pressure on Kuminga to return by cutting off discussions of a potential sign-and-trade this offseason, sources said.
“Not enough value has presented itself to the Warriors for them to move off Kuminga, which is why they want him back on a short-term deal.”
It is unclear where this will end up. Both sides are holding firm, and there’s no sign either is willing to compromise anytime soon.
Kuminga and his agent have already told Golden State they will not be backing down anytime soon. And with both sides digging in their heels, there’s no clear resolution in sight.
