Warriors stars have telling comments about Jonathan Kuminga

Jonathan Kuminga’s future with the Golden State Warriors is in serious doubt, and it sounds like the team’s star players know where things are headed.

Steph Curry and Draymond Green both had telling remarks about Kuminga’s future on Wednesday, with the young forward set to become a restricted free agent this summer. Curry had praise for Kuminga and said the forward has a bright future, “whether it’s here or whether it’s wherever.”

Draymond Green had very similar sentiments. Green said Kuminga has a bright future and has grown as a player, but only went as far as to say that Kuminga would be back with Golden State in an “ideal” world.

It is quite telling that neither of the Warriors’ big stars were willing to publicly go to bat and urge management to retain Kuminga going forward. They seem resigned to the idea that he is likely going to depart in the offseason.

While Warriors ownership is fond of Kuminga, coach Steve Kerr appears to have major doubts. There were claims before the season that Kerr and Kuminga did not see eye-to-eye, and Kuminga’s status as a bit-part player in the first round of the playoffs seemed to confirm that. The Warriors did ultimately turn to him more after Curry hurt his hamstring, but he ultimately never fully won Kerr’s trust.

Kuminga averaged 15.3 points in 24.3 minutes per game for the Warriors this season, but injuries limited him to 47 games. It was reported at the start of the season that he would likely attract significant trade interest if Golden State opted to go that route, and that probably has not changed.
