Warriors veteran ruled out of season opener against the Suns

Per Shams Charania of the Athletic, Draymond Green won't participate in the Golden State Warriors season opener.

Green suffered an ankle sprain at the start of the Warriors training camp. He recently began practicing in a five-on-five setting, however, it would appear he has failed in the race against time to be ready to play against the Phoenix Suns.

Golden State has been busy rebuilding its roster this summer. Green signed a four-year $100M contract extension. Steve Kerr will likely approach his star forward's fitness cautiously.

Golden State's game against Phoenix will be a litmus test for both sides. The Suns added Bradley Beal during the offseason. They now have a big three that also features Kevin Durant and Devin Booker.

Golden State acquired Chris Paul via trade, giving them an elite backcourt. Both franchises believe they're capable of winning a championship. Green's fitness and availability will be a big factor in any success the Warriors have.

Winning the opening game of the season has little effect on the bigger plan, as there are still 81 regular-season games left to play, but Green's absence will hurt.

However, the Warriors have navigated preseason without him. It won't be a huge adjustment for Kerr or his playing staff. The Suns may look to attack a Warriors team that is likely to go small.

Klay Thompson has spent most of preseason playing as a power forward on the defensive end. Durant or Beal will both look to exploit that advantage.

Usually, Green would comprise that role and excel at nullifying the threat of an opposing team's best player. It won't be long until Golden State has Green back in their rotation. They will be at full strength sooner rather than later.

Only then will we start to see if the Warriors are truly championship-caliber.
