Down one point in overtime Sunday, Cody Martin of the Charlotte Hornets had a chance to corral a missed free throw and give his team a final shot. His twin brother, Caleb, had other ideas.
With five seconds remaining in overtime and the Philadelphia 76ers clinging to a one-point lead, Guerschon Yabusele went to the free throw line and missed his first shot. When he missed the second, Cody Martin grabbed the rebound and the Hornets had new life — but only for a moment.
Martin's brother Caleb, a forward for the 76ers, managed to snag the loose board as the ball slipped out of his twin's hands. Caleb would then hit both of his free throws, icing the game for Philadelphia on the way to a 107-105 victory.
Cody and Caleb are identical twins who played together for years. In college, both twins played at North Carolina State, then transferred together to Nevada. Cody was drafted with the No. 36 pick by the Hornets in 2019, while Caleb signed as an undrafted free agent.
Then the two played together for Charlotte's G League affiliate, the Greensboro Swarm, as well as the NBA team.
The twins were finally separated in 2021, when Charlotte released Caleb and he signed with the Miami Heat. He thrived in Miami, helping the Heat to the NBA Finals with a standout performance in the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals, and signed a lucrative multi-year deal with Philadelphia this summer.
For years, Cody had the upper hand. He was a higher draft choice, signed a bigger contract earlier and stuck with Charlotte. But since then, Caleb has been in the playoffs, played more minutes and been paid more money.
Losing a game-sealing rebound is just one more twin-dignity for Cody to suffer.
