Earlier this spring, New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye referred to his club's 29-13 Super Bowl loss to the Seattle Seahawks as a "humbling" experience. Maye offered those comments before he and his teammates learned that they would be opening the 2026 season with a matchup at the Seahawks on Sept. 9.
While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Maye challenged Patriots players to prepare themselves for the possible revenge spot.
"I think it's a chance for us to get some extra motivation during training camp," Maye said about the upcoming Super Bowl rematch, per Nick Shook of the NFL's website. "You know, starting off with the bang like that, a chance to get an opponent that left a bad taste in our mouth. So, I think it's something for us that's going to really make us work. We've got to bring it Week 1 on the road in a tough environment. They're going to be hanging their banner, and that's the part of it. So, I think it's going to be interesting. It's going to be fun. It's going to be a tough task. So, it'll be something for us to get some extra motivation and make training camp better."
Maye's Super Bowl LX week ultimately became a negative experience in multiple ways. Days after outsiders learned that he had finished second in 2025 regular-season MVP Award voting behind Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams, the Seahawks sacked Maye six times and forced him into committing three turnovers (one fumble, two interceptions). The last of those giveaways resulted in Seattle scoring a defensive touchdown that ensured the Patriots wouldn't complete a dramatic comeback.
Last week, Patriots safety Brenden Schooler admitted that the Super Bowl loss left him with a chip on his shoulder. As for Maye, it sounds like he may check out some game film from the defeat before the 2026 Week 1 contest arrives.
"I think you definitely take a peek at it," Maye said about reviewing what went wrong in the Super Bowl. "You know, for me, on the biggest stage and a big game, and I had a lot of plays I wish I had back. I definitely watched it, and at such a young point in my career where I can still learn so much. And first time playing that defense. So, you can learn things and learn about the game. So, I think there's definitely some parts that, maybe throws that I maybe skip, or now I want to watch that again. But there's definitely the game, I think you learn so much from, mistakes that you make yourself."
As of Thursday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook already had the Patriots as 3.5-point underdogs against the Seahawks. Perhaps Maye will use that information for additional motivation during training camp.
