Watch: Analyst says Michael Jordan's tenure as Hornets owner mars his legacy

Michael Jordan's time as the majority owner of the Charlotte Hornets should have an impact on his legacy, Fox Sports analyst Nick Wright said on "The Herd." With the recent news that Jordan is selling most of his stake in the franchise, the longtime pundit added a new and somewhat tenuous layer to sports' loudest argument.

While not outwardly saying LeBron James' name in the overwrought "greatest player of all-time" debate between him and Jordan, Wright dived into the playbook critique of the legendary Chicago Bulls guard when shading his leadership as team governor. “His ownership tenure of the Hornets," said Wright, "was identical to his playing tenure when Scottie Pippen wasn’t his teammate.”

A bad season or two generally looks bad on a coach and maybe his or her general manager. A few poor seasons brings the stench upward to management, even if its decisions are signed off by the people who write the checks. However, Jordan began to take a lot more heat over the Hornets' mediocrity as the relative power of the NBA swung back toward the Eastern Conference (the Denver Nuggets' championship this June, notwithstanding). Charlotte certainly had some bad luck such as LaMelo Ball's injuries, but draft misses and the inability to attract major free agents are absolutely fair indictments on all of the team's leadership, including the owner's.

In the unrelenting Jordan vs. LeBron debate that fuels cable sports and social media, pundits will always find ways to stretch facts, data and rumors to keep both sides engaged, even if the takes are certainly made for engagement instead of enlightenment. Even writing and publishing this post furthers the conversation, adding more metrics to keep a topic that long ago lost its novelty in the sporting zeitgeist.

At the moment, Jordan defenders can only counter Wright's take with the "LeGM" jokes, yet the real opportunity won't come until James himself buys an NBA team, one that can reside in one of the hottest markets in all of sports.
