San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama is widely viewed as the next big thing in the NBA.

After all, Victor Wembanyama has shown incredible growth since getting picked as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.

In fact, the San Antonio Spurs star was the frontrunner to win the 2024-25 NBA Defensive Player of the Year award before suffering a season-ending injury.

With the Spurs expected to compete for an NBA Championship next season, fans are hoping to see Wembanyama elevate his game further. However, former NBA All-Star Jeff Teague recently dropped a surprising take on Wemby.

Jeff Teague thinks Paolo Banchero is better than Victor Wembanyama

While there’s no doubt that Wembanyama is backed to one day become the face of the league, Teague believes he’s still far from that.

In fact, the 2021 NBA champ claimed that as of right now, he prefers Orlando Magic star Paolo Banchero over Wembanyama.

“I’m taking him over Wemby, I’m taking P5 over Wemby. Right now, I’m taking him over Wemby, bro. The reason I say he’s better than Wemby is because Wemby ain’t really done nothing,” Teague said on the Club 520 podcast.

He added: “We just like Wemby because he’s a freak. He’s a phenomenal player, but I’m just going to go with what I see.”

Now, that’s a massive take from Teague. But is it a surprise? After all, he’s known for such takes, including ranking Steph Curry above Magic Johnson in all-time NBA debates.

Victor Wembanyama vs Paolo Banchero NBA career

Considering both Wembanyama and Banchero were the top picks in their respective drafts, it’s obvious that fans have immense expectations from them.

So far, Banchero has completed three years in the NBA as compared to Wembanyama’s two. But what about their numbers? Well, here’s a quick comparison of the same.

Stats Victor Wembanyama Paolo Banchero
Points 22.5 PPG 22.4 PPG
Rebounds 10.8 RPG 7.1 RPG
Assists 3.8 APG 4.6 APG

Both stars’ scoring and playmaking are more or less the same, but Wembanyama takes the edge in terms of rebounding.

Additionally, Wembanyama is viewed as a much better defender than Banchero. So, what could be the reason behind ranking the latter over the former?

Well, the only edge that Banchero has over Wemby is leading the Magic to a playoff appearance. As the Magic have been to the postseason in back-to-back seasons, albeit getting eliminated in the opening round.
