Grizzlies

Grizzlies big man Jaren Jackson Jr. says he’s “progressing the right way” following a turf toe procedure in July, per Damichael Cole of the Memphis Commercial Appeal. Speaking at his youth basketball camp in Memphis, Jackson added, “Every day has been a building block.”

The Grizzlies will reevaluate him in late September, giving the two-time All-Star just over three weeks to prepare for opening night vs. New Orleans.

Jackson didn’t guarantee he’d be ready but sounded optimistic: “I think everybody is going to be happy.”

It’s already been an eventful summer for Jackson. He locked in a five-year, $240 million extension, switched his jersey to No. 8 in honor of his father, and emphasized his bond with the Memphis community.

In 74 games last season, Jackson averaged 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks while shooting nearly 49 percent.

Rockets

Rockets coach Ime Udoka told Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle he wanted Alperen Sengun to “be aggressive and get back to dominating.”

Sengun has delivered at EuroBasket, shining as a passer and scorer while staying efficient against defenses built to stop him.

Timberwolves

Two years after Minnesota was roasted for sending Utah a haul for Rudy Gobert, Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic now calls it a win.

Gobert’s defensive presence has reshaped the Timberwolves’ culture and turned them into a destination instead of a cautionary tale.
