Learn more about Stephen Curry's life and career:

Stephen Curry's Early Life

Wardell Stephen Curry II was born March 14, 1988, in Akron, Ohio, to Dell and Sonya Curry. Dell played 16 years in the NBA, and his 9,839 points were the most in Charlotte Hornets history at the time he retired. Steph grew up in Charlotte and led Charlotte Christian School to three conference titles and three state playoff appearances.

Curry was small at 160 pounds, which scared off some major colleges from recruiting him. He chose to attend Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina.

College Career

In Curry's second game as a freshman, he dropped 32 points against Michigan. He finished the season averaging 21.5 points per game, second only to Texas' Kevin Durant among freshmen in NCAA history.

As a sophomore, Curry led Davidson to a 26-6 record (20-0 Southern Conference), and the Wildcats made considerable noise in the NCAA Tournament. Curry dropped 40 on No. 7 seed Gonzaga, leading Davidson to its first tournament win since 1969. They also took down No. 2 seed Georgetown and No. 3 seed Wisconsin. They ultimately fell, 59-57, to eventual national champion Kansas in the Elite Eight.

Davidson failed to make the NCAA Tournament in Curry's junior season, when he averaged 28.6 points, 5.6 assists and 2.5 steals per game.

Early Professional Career

Curry entered the 2009 NBA Draft and was selected seventh overall by the Golden State Warriors. He averaged 17.5 points, 5.9 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game, and finished runner-up for NBA Rookie of the Year to Tyreke Evans of the Sacramento Kings.

Curry was solid as a young player, but it was in his fourth year that things began to take off. In 2012-13, he averaged 22.9 points per game and increased his 3-point attempts from 4.7 per game to 7.7 per game. Curry's emergence was a key part of a shift in the league, backed by data, that 3-pointers were more efficient than midrange shots. Curry and shooting guard Klay Thompson, dubbed "The Splash Brothers," led the Warriors to an upset of the the No. 3 seed Denver Nuggets in the first round of the playoffs, but they fell to the San Antonio Spurs in the second round.

In 2013-14, Curry received his first All-Star selection, and Golden State took the No. 3 seed Los Angeles Clippers to seven games in the first round of the playoffs. He averaged a career-high 24.0 points per game and attempted 7.9 3-pointers per game, hitting 42.4%.

Rise to Stardom

After the 2013-14 season, the Warriors let go of defensive-minded head coach Mark Jackson and replaced him with former sharpshooter Steve Kerr. Kerr, who won five rings as a player with the Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs, opened up the offense with a faster pace, greater spacing and more freedom for shooters.

The Warriors won the NBA title in Kerr's first season, beginning a run of five straight Finals appearances. Curry was league MVP in 2015-16 as Golden State went 73-9 and broke the 1995-96 Bulls' all-time record for wins in a season. They ultimately lost in the Finals to LeBron James' Cleveland Cavaliers, who rallied from a 3-1 series deficit.

The Dubs made a meteoric splash that offseason, landing superstar Kevin Durant in a move that helped propel them to the next two championships.

In 2021-22, Curry won his fourth ring and was named NBA Finals MVP.

Off the court, Curry and his wife, Ayesha, have become one of the most beloved and endeared power couples in pop culture.
