New York Knicks Karl-Anthony Towns isn't the fighting type. Moreover, he doesn't like to air dirty laundry over the airwaves or on social media. However, Towns will go to war for his head coach, Tom Thibodeau. Before the Knicks 112-98 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday, Towns shared his frank opinion defending Thibodeau.
During Thibodeau's 13-year career as an NBA coach, he's garnered quite an honorable reputation. However, aside from not winning a championship as a head coach, there is one other glaring issue NBA analysts and fans critique.
Thibodeau is infamous for overextending his players' minutes, especially in terms of star variety. The first example was Chicago Bulls Derrick Rose. While Rose's initial ACL injury 2012 isn't entirely on Thibodeau, the fact that he left his star player in a playoff game with 1:22 left to play, up 12, calls for valid criticism.
Jimmy Butler, for the same franchise, had the same experience with Thibodeau as his head coach. However, his legs could take the heavy mileage, although he's starting to feel it in his late 30s.
Thibodeau hasn't changed his ways with the Knicks, but Towns doesn't want to hear the naysayers judging his coach.
“I feel like ya’ll give him flack all the time," Towns said. "No matter where he is. But y’all keep talking about him, and that means he keeps getting a job, and that means everyone keeps respecting him and knowing what he can do for a team. He’s done it in Chicago, he did it in Boston, he did it with us in Minny. And he’s doing it here. Even before I got here. So say what you want about Thibs — he gets the job done.”
"Getting the job done" could be analyzed to bits, but in fairness to Thibodeau, the grizzly-voiced Knicks coach, for the most part, performed well at every franchise stop.
