Kyrie Irving’s third season with the Dallas Mavericks ended abruptly due to a torn ACL injury.
When the Dallas Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, the scoring burden automatically fell on the shoulders of Kyrie Irving.
However, on March 03, 2025, Irving’s body gave out as he suffered a torn ACL injury. The 2016 NBA champion’s season ended on the spot.
Irving has obviously spent the last few months recovering from the devastating injury, as the Mavs star is expected to miss major time during the 2025-26 NBA season.
NBA fans have shown nothing but support for Irving, assuming he’s feeling down because of the injury. However, the 9x NBA All-Star recently named a ‘wonderful’ impact of the torn ACL injury.
“Feels like I’ve added a few years on my career to be honest with you. I definitely feel like this break has been wonderful for me. I was definitely putting in so much work over these last few years.
“It’s the longest I’ve had a chance to be able to take a moment, enjoy the successes that have come over the past few years,” Irving said on a Twitch stream (h/t kyriegotgame).
Considering Irving relies on his impressive speed and agility to perform on the court, an ACL injury could derail the remainder of his career. Instead, Irving believes getting this elongated rest makes life easier for him.

It’s obvious that the 33-year-old cannot play full-fledged basketball, at least for a couple of more months. So what’s Irving doing in his free time?
For starters, Irving has revisited his major career moments, including the 2017 trade to the Boston Celtics. Aside from that, the Mavericks veteran is seemingly trying to become a better person.
“Reflect on some of the failures that have helped me grow, and the lessons that came from them. And then not take, at times, myself too serious, or be too hypercritical,” Irving stated.
Either way, the Mavericks have shown full cooperation as their star guard recovers. After all, the Mavs and Irving agreed to a new deal ahead of the 2025-26 season.
